[004] — Tim Kim
How I Learned to Code in 4 Months
The flagship launch video that took a brand-new YouTube channel from zero to six figures of subscribers.
[01] The Brief
Tim Kim went from college dropout with zero technical skills to a software developer job in four months and wanted to launch a YouTube channel with that story. The video had to genuinely teach the path from novice to professional developer while staying entertaining enough to compete on YouTube.
It launched on June 13, 2023 as one of the first three videos released on the channel.
[02] My Role
As Producer and Editor, I co-owned the video from creative development through post: structure, pacing, motion graphics, branding, and the packaging decisions, thumbnails, titling, metadata, that decide whether a launch video lives or dies.
On the channel more broadly, I owned the complete YouTube pipeline: shooting, editing, captions, content planning, publishing, and analytics.
[03] The Craft
Retention was the design constraint. Across the channel, videos held 45–50% audience retention through the critical first 30 seconds, the window where most viewers decide to leave. Every cold open, cut, and graphic was built around earning the next ten seconds of attention.
